NU ends two-game drought
Jorelle Singh of National University pounds an attack against Iriga's defenders.

National University arrested a two-game losing slump with a mighty 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 bounce back win over provincial team Iriga Lady Oragons on Monday in the 13th V-League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

NU improved to 2-2 win-loss record tied with idle Laoag Power Smashers.

Setter Jasmin Nabor played an all-around game to impress Lady Bulldogs coach Roger Gorayeb, scoring 10 points with four coming off kill blocks on top of her 26 excellent sets.

Jorelle Singh led NU with 12 points coming from nine attacks and three service aces while 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago and Audrey Paran finished with nine markers each.

Despite the win, Gorayeb was far from satisfied.

“Mayroon kasi akong mga changes sa team ko na ginagawa na gusto kong lumabas. Dito sa laro na ito medyo hindi ko nakita,” said the mentor, whose wards lost in back-to-back five-setters before getting back on the right track.

“May communication problem na naman kanina lalo na sa first set. Yun ang ayoko e. Tapos yung mga bata ‘yung confidence level nila hindi pa ganoon kataas. Sana tumaas pa,” he added. “Siguro lang masama ang gising ng Iriga kaya mababa ang kanilang nilaro, habol sila ng habol.”

NU dominated the opening set with a blistering start as the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of Iriga not fielding top hitter Grazielle Bombita, who’s suffering from stomach cramps. Bombita did enter the game but struggled the whole match.

The Lady Oragons fought back in the second set with a 4-0 lead only to see the NU mount a blinding 10-1 run to control the frame. The Lady Bulldogs dropped the hammer in the third frame to finish the match in just 67 minutes.

Shola Alvarez was limited to only eight points while Bombita was shackled to only four markers after averaging 14.33 points in her first three outings as the Bicolanas suffered its second straight loss to drop to 1-3 slate.
