It’s hard kung sa condition mo rin talaga na nawala ka (sa paglalaro) for a month -- Alyssa Valdez
Alyssa Valdez played as if she never had a long break from competitive volleyball.
The three-time UAAP Most Valuable player showed no signs of rust despite being away from volleyball battle for more than a month.
Valdez showed the way for BaliPure’s third straight victory Monday in her debut as the Purest Water Defenders outlasted the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 20-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-17, 15-12, in the 13th V-League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
She scored 26 points coming from 23 kills and three aces while helping man the floor with 18 perfect receptions for BaliPure.
The humble local volleyball darling gave credit to her teammates for helping her get her usual numbers.
“I think tinulungan din kasi ako ng teammates ko to get the points also,” she said. “But you know kung dikitan talaga (ang laban) it’s hard kung sa condition mo rin talaga na nawala ka (sa paglalaro) for a month.”
Valdez’s last competitive volleyball match was in Game 3 of the 78th UAAP Finals when the Lady Eagles were overthrown from their two-year reign by archrival De La Salle last April 30.
Since then Valdez got her well-deserved rest, hitting the court only to teach kids during her volleyball camp and playing exhibition games for the Filipino community in London and Italy.
“Siguro ‘yung mga points medyo nahirapan (din ako) talaga to get it. It’s not na ‘yung sarili ko lang din siguro. But sobrang tinulungan ako ng mga teammates ko. They adjusted sa kung ano pa ang kulang at kung ano ang kailangan,” said Valdez, who will turn 23 on June 29.
“(Dahil doon) nakaka-get ka rin talaga ng points, ganoon lang. Tulungan lang talaga pero ang hirap din,” she added.
