Ysay Marasigan of Cignal smashes an attack as the HD Spikers pocket their fourth straight win.
Cignal kept its pristine record intact as the HD Spikers outlasted Insituto Estetico Manila, 25-13, 34-36, 25-15, 17-25, 19-17, Monday in a preview of a possible championship match in the 2nd Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Ysay Marasigan smashed 14 kills as the former Ateneo de Manila star scattered 16 points to lead the HD Spikers to a perfect 4-0 win-loss record and are a win away from completing a sweep of the eliminations.
Edmar Bonono added 11 points with eight coming off kills including the match-clinching hit that capped the two-hour, 14-minute joust of two squads that are already assured of seats in the semifinals. Raymark Woo and Herschel Ramos scored nine markers each for Cignal, which will close its elims campaign on June 29 against Sta. Elena.
But head coach Michael Carino is far from satisfied with his team’s performance, saying that his team relaxed after taking a 2-1 match advantage and were rusty after a two-week break.
“Nag-relax na naman, dapat walang relax sa volleyball sa parlor lang 'yun,” said in a Carino. “Sorang laking epekto rin kasi ('yung break). ‘Yung momentum namin sa first 3 games ang taas ngayon parang nawala. Parang back to zero kami.”
The HD Spikers held a 12-9 lead in the fifth set only to see the Phoenix Volley Masters catch up and extend the deciding frame. IEM saved a match point for the last deadlock at 17. A service error from Warren Pirante and Bonono’s kill capped the match.
Greg Dolor finished with 21 points, Jeffrey Jimenez had 18 while Edan Canlas had 11 for IEM, which dropped to 3-1 card.
