They were the better team.

BaliPure star hitter Alyssa Valdez showed class even after a painful loss, giving credit to Pocari Sweat’s superb game that gave the Lady Warriors the last championship ticket in the 13th V-League Open Conference.

The Lady Warriors upended the crowd-favorite Purest Water Defenders, 15-25, 27-25, 25-11, 25-23, Monday night in Game 3 to complete a come-from-behind best-of-three semifinals series win at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

“They really fought super as a team, they had teamwork, they had everything so they won today so kami we’re really just happy to be back together, we’re happy to be teammates again,” said Valdez, who endured another series-deciding game loss after she and her college team Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles surrendered the UAAP crown to bitter rival De La Salle.

Valdez was reunited with former Ateneo teammates Charo Soriano, Denden Lazaro, Dzi Gervacio, Mae Tajima, Amy Ahomiro, Ella De Jesus, Jem Ferrer and Bea Tan in BaliPure.

“They really deserve the win, they train so hard, we can’t find any excuse naman kung bakit kami natalo,” added the three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player.

Valdez was limited to only 15 points with a hellish 14-of-45 spiking clip that showed how Pocari Sweat’s net defense gave the 23-year-old hitter a hard time getting her usual numbers. She averaged 24 points in the first two games of the series.

BaliPure took the series opener, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24, before Pocari Sweat equalized with a five-set thriller, 25-23, 13-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8, last Saturday to force a decider.

Pocari Sweat will face Philippine Air Force in the best-of-three title series starting July 13.

The Water Defenders will take on Laoag Power Smashers in the best-of-three battle for third.

In case the championship series ends in two games and the third place tussle is tied at one game apiece, the team with the better tiebreaker will win the bronze.
