Ateneo drops four-setter match after giving Thais a scare
The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles gave Thailand a scare before yielding in four sets.

Two-time UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila showed valiant effort and great heart against a stronger, more powerful opponent but Thailand proved to be a great mountain for the Blue Eagles to scale.

Marck Espejo and Ysay Marasigan led the Blue Eagles to give their opponent quite a scare but in the end Ateneo fell victim to the might of the Thais, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, Tuesday in their opening day assignment in men’s volleyball of the 18th ASEAN University Games at the National University of Singapore Multi-Purpose Sports Hall 5.

Looking to force a deciding set after taking the third frame, Ateneo fought back from a 14-20 hole to tie it at 22.

The Thais scored the next two points to reach match point before the Blue Eagles equalized with back-to-back markers capped by a powerful hammer from UAAP Most Valuable Player Espejo.

But it was Ateneo’s last hurrah as Thailand nailed the next two points to silence the Blue Eagles.

Ateneo faces Laos on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., Singapore on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. before concluding its preliminary round stint against Indonesia at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
