BaliPure captured the third place trophy by sweeping the best-of-three series against Laoag.
BaliPure completed its domination of Laoag as the Purest Water Defenders swept the Power Smashers in the best-of-three battle for third series, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, Saturday in the 13th V-League Open Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Conference Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones showed the way for the Water Defenders to salvage a third place finish after falling short of making it to the championship round.
Soltones led four other players in double-digit scoring with 18 points including 14 from kills. Amy Ahomiro finished with 15 points built on an outstanding 5-block performance while Janine Marciano, who had 25 markers in Game One, registered 12 points with eight excellent receptions.
Dzi Gervacio played an all-around game with 11 points and 12 digs while Mae Tajima finished with 10.
The crowd-favorite bucked a slow start to take the next three sets and finished the series despite playing without superstar Alyssa Valdez, who was awarded the 1st Best Outside Hitter award.
It was a double-celebration for Valdez, who in Singapore led the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles to a bronze medal finish in the 18th ASEAN University Games.
BaliPure took the series opener, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11, last Wednesday.
It was Laoag’s third loss to BaliPure in as many meeting in the conference since suffering a straight sets loss in the eliminations.
Katherine Villegas scored 16 points, Jessica Galanza had 12 while Jovielyn Prado posted 10 markers for the Power Smashers.
