Foton clinches last top four spot in second round
Foton secured the last top four spot heading into the second round.

BATANGAS CITY –-- Foton completed the top four teams in second round with a quick work of Standard Insurance-Navy, 25-11, 25-22, 25-11, Tuesday in the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference women’s volleyball tournament at the Batangas City Coliseum here.

“Happy na kami kasi pasok na kami sa top four. Para kaming nabunutan ng tinik,” said a relieved Tornadoes coach Vilet Ponce De Leon after Foton posted its fourth win in seven games in the preliminary round.

The victory gave Foton the fourth spot in the standings behind league-leading and undefeated F2 Logistics and RC Cola-Army with identical 6-0 win-loss records and reigning champion Petron (4-2).

Jaja Santiago led Foton with 17 points coming off 14 kills and three kill blocks while Maika Ortiz and EJ Laure scored nine and eight points, respectively, for the AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship-bound Tornadoes.

Foton played fluidly and executed their game plan perfectly never giving the Corvettes a chance to mount a serious threat except in the second set where the Tornadoes were to blame for putting their guards down.

“Maganda ang nilaro ng mga bata although medyo nag-relax lang talag sa second set,” said Ponce De Leon.

The top four teams will again go through a round robin format to determine their placing in the knockout semifinals where the top team takes on the no. 4 squad while the no. 2 faces the no. 3 team.

No player in the Standard Insurance-Navy side finished in double figures with Norie Jane Diaz ending up with team-best eight points.

The Corvettes fell for the fourth time in six games.

Navy, Generika (2-5), Cignal (1-5) and Amy’s (0-6) are relegated to bracket B side where they will go the same format in the second round to determine their final placing in the tournament.
