Lefty Aiza Maizo-Pontillas of Petron scores a kill over through the defense of Standard Insurance-Navy.
Petron vented its ire on Standard Insurance-Navy to rebound from a setback the last time out with an empathic 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 win to build momentum heading to the next round of the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
Veteran hitter Aiza Maizo-Pontillas smashed 13 kills with a pair of service aces for game-high 15 points to lead the Tri-Activ Spikers to its fifth win in seven games to end the first round of eliminations at third spot behind league-leading RC Cola-Army and F2 Logistics, who are still playing as of posting time.
Maica Morada added 13 markers while Benadeth Pons, Remy Palma and Frances Molina scored nine points each for Petron, which is in Group A in the next round bunched with Army, F2 Logistics and Foton.
The top four teams play in the second phase for another round robin to determine their seeding in the knockout semifinals.
Petron’s only losses came from the Cargo Movers and Lady Troopers, which gave the Tri-Activ Spikers a straight sets beating last Thursday.
“Noong nakalaban namin sila kumbaga nasa experimental stage pa lang kami,” Petron coach Pascua said pof their defeats against two of the top title contenders. “’Yung chemistry hindi pa rin makuha kasi nga may bago may luma. Ngayon luma na ang ginamit plus dalawa lang ‘yung bago na sina Remy lang at Pons. Kasi dati mas maraming bago, ngayon ginawa namin ito to adjust lang para sa semis.”
Pascua said that against the Corvettes they had the privilege to adjust with his rotation in preparation for the next round.
Pascua moved Morada and Molina in front replacing Pons and Palma and it did wonders as Petron collected 48 total attack points with Morada scoring 10 kills.
“Kailangan kasi iba-ibahin mo ang tao kasi nai-scout ng kalaban yan eh so kahit papaano may konting twist ng kaunti. Knowing Army kasi matagal na silang magkakasama, yung F2 ganoon din,” the mentor said.
Pau Soriano led Navy with six points while Florence Madulid had five.
The Corvettes closed the first round with a 2-5 card tied with Cignal and Generika.
Navy, Cignal, Generika and winless Amy’s Kitchen are relegated in Group B for the classification phase which is another round robin stage to determine their last seeding for the final placing battle.
