Geneveve Casugod of Generika soars for a kill.
Generika exacted revenge on their first round tormentor Cignal, crawling back from an early one set deficit to take down the HD Spikers, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22, Sunday to kick off the 2016 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Group B second round preliminary phase at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lifesaver got their much-needed morale boost after missing the cut in the Top Four and are now in a perfect position to at least salvage a fifth place finish after the classification stage.
Arellano University middle Angelica Macabalitao led Generika with 14 points capped by hitting the game-clinching service ace as the Lifesavers joined Standard Insurance-Navy in Group B early winners’ list.
“Kailangan naming manalo talaga. ‘Yun ang hiling sa amin ng management ng Generika na sana manalo kami itong game na ito para tumaas naman ang morale ng mga bata,” said Generika assistant coach Rosemarie Prochina, who called the shots for the squad as head coach Francis Vicente is still in Thailand to handle the national youth team competing in the AVC U-19 Women's Volleyball Championship.
Geneveve Casugod had 13 points, Shaya Adorador finished with 12 while Wensh Tiu got 10 for the Lifesavers, who lost to Cignal in their first meeting.
“Inisip namin na sana makabawi man lang. Sila kasi iniisip nila na manalo pero pagdating dyan parang kinakabahan siguro mental,” Prochina added. “So at least nakabawi na.”
Jeannette Panaga had 15 markers while Carmela Tunay and Cherry Vivas scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, in a lost cause for the HD Spikers.
