Jaja Santiago of Foton Tornadoes hammers a kill above the block.
University of Sto. Tomas duo EJ Laure and Cherry Rondina powered the Foton Tornadoes in a shocking demolition of reigning titlist Petron Tri-Activ Spikers, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, Saturday night in the second round of the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
New recruits Laure and Rondina showed the way with 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the peaking 2015 Grand Prix champion for a 2-0 record in Group A of the round robin stage for the knockout semifinals seeding.
The duo combined for 29 of the total 43 attack points scattered by Foton while 6-foot-5 middle Jaja Santiago finishes with 14 points with four kill blocks and a pair of service aces.
The win sets up a perfect backdrop for Sunday’s match as the Tornadoes face off with another unbeaten team in F2 Logistics to determine which team will end up as the top seed in the Final Four.
No Petron player scored in double-figures with Aiza Maizo-Pontillas held down to only eight points while Bernadeth Pons was silenced to only seven.
Petron dropped to 0-2 tied with Sunday’s opponent RC Cola-Army.
