Gretchcel Soltones dropped 20 points to lead San Sebastian past Perpetual Help.
Grethcel Soltones carried the fight for the still rusty San Sebastian Lady Stags in a straight sets disposal of a weary Perpetual Help side, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22, Saturday to begin their Group A preliminary round campaign in the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The back-to-back NCAA Most Valuable Player unleashed 20 points to lead the Lady Stags with 19 coming from kills. The Open Conference MVP also played superb defense with nine digs and six excellent receptions for the NCAA Season 91 runner up.
“First game siyempre nangangapa ‘yung mga bata. May opening jitters, totoo sa amin ‘yun,” said assistant coach Clint Malazo. “Buti na lang nanalo kasi maiksi ang tournament.”
Malazo pointed out that the Lady Stags need to get more points from other players instead of relying too much on Soltones.
“May mga experience na ang karamihan siguro kailangan makakuha pa kami ng isa pang makakatulong talaga ni Grethcel,” Malazo said. “Si Grethcel lang talaga, eh kapag si Grethcel ang nawalan ng laro mahirap ng makakuha ng score.”
After Soltones, Katherine Villegas scored nine while the rest of the team had 12 markers combined for the Lady Stags.
SSC-R found it hard to take down NCAA rival Perpetual despite the core of the Lady Altas playing tired with their second match of the day. Most of the Las Pinas-based squad’s players came from a game for Amy’s Kitchen early afternoon in the Philippine Superliga at The Arena in San Juan.
And Malazo isn’t impressed with the way his team played.
“‘Yung mga ganyang team na medyo kayang talunin dapat talunin kasi may NU pa kami at Ateneo pa kaya kailangang-kailangan ang panalo ngayon,” he added.
Cindy Imbo finished with 11 points as the only Lady Altas in double figures with 11 while Lourdes Clemente had nine.
