Technological Institute of the Philippines guest player Mylene Paat fueled the Lady Engineers huge upset over Ateneo.
Unheralded Technological Institute of the Philippines toppled a giant in Ateneo de Manila University with its top hitter Alyssa Valdez sitting on the bench playing a different role.
The Lady Engineers outlasted the Lady Eagles, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12 on Monday night to score a morale-boosting upset to open their campaign in Group A preliminary round of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Down 10-11 in the fifth set, the Lady Engineers took advantage of Ponggay Gaston’s service error to spark a 5-1 finishing kick sealed by Ateneo's last of atrocious 52 errors that sealed the doom for the Lady Eagles, who played for the first time without Valdez.
The former Queen Eagle is listed in the lineup but the team’s management decided to put her as an assistant coach instead to give the Lady Eagles that eligible to play in the next UAAP season the much-needed exposure.
Paat led TIP's assault with 14 points including 10 kills while Eunice Mabayao chipped in nine markers for the Lady Engineers, who finished 11th in the 12-man field last year winning only one game against De La Salle-Dasmarinas also in five sets.
Another reinforcement Chie Saet dished out 33 excellent sets on top of four points for the Lady Engineers, who moved on top of the heap tied with idle San Sebastian Lady Stags.
"Actually masaya naman kami doon sa panalo namin so nagpapasalamat din ako sa dalawa naming guest players, si Chie Saet at Mylene Paat," said a very happy TIP coach Achilles Paril. "Actually kailangan namin yung dalawang guest player na iyon kasi marami kaming nawalang players. Actually six players ang nawala from the core ng team due to graduation."
The Lady Engineers stole the opening set by saving a match point on a tip-in by Eunice Mabayao. Gaston overshot her spike as TIP scored on the next play to take the set.
The Lady Eagles retaliated in the second set only to see themselves down deep, 18-10, in the third frame. Behind Michelle Morente, Kim Gequillana and Gaston, Ateneo trimmed its deficit to 21-22 before TIP blasted a closing three-point spurt to take a 2-1 match lead.
Ateneo broke an early 8-8 deadlock in the fourth with a 6-3 rally and the Lady Engineers never got closer to two as the Lady Eagles forced a deciding frame.
Gaston top scored for Ateneo with 17 points, Morente had 16 and returning Ana Gopico had 10 markers while setter Jia Morado gave 59 excellent sets in a lost cause.
Jhoanna Maraguinot and Bea De Leon were in the venue but didn't suit up to rest their minor injuries.
