San Beda looks to bounce back in joust with debuting UST
San Beda is looking to erase their three-set loss in the opening day by taking on a young University of Sto. Tomas side.

San Beda College looks to bounce back from an opening day set back on Wednesday when the Lady Red Spikers cross paths with a young University of Sto. Tomas side in Group B preliminary round of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Lady Red Spikers and Tigresses clash in the curtain-raiser slated at 4:00 p.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.

San Beda absorbed a rude welcome last Saturday when rising UAAP power University of the Philippines easily brushed off the debuting Lady Red Spikers, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20.

Head coach Nemesio Gavino admitted that they are facing another tough challenge against another UAAP team. He said that even if UST plays without most of its senior players, the Tigresses remain a force to reckon with.

“Ang UST hindi rin basta-basta na team ‘yan kasi alam naman natin na institusyon na ‘yan pagdating sa volleyball,” he said. “Pinaghandaan naming ng mabuti ito para mabigyan din namin sila ng magandang laban.”

Gavino will need to squeeze more from his wards led by Francesca Racraquin, who scored, 16 points the last timeout, Nieza Viray and gust player Wenneth Eulalio. The team’s other reinforcement Janine Marciano is expected to see action this game after missing the opening match.

UST, on the other hand, will showcase two youthful guest players in high school standouts Eya Laure and Maji Mangulabnan.

Laure and Mangulabnan led the Junior Tigresses in conquering the Girls V-League Natioal Championship. The UAAP Season 78 high school MVP Laure earned the league’s season MVP and Best Outside Spiker award while Mangulabnan was named Best Setter in the GVL.

Back for UST are veterans Cherry Rondina and Eya’s elder sister EJ Laure to guide and lead the young squad composed mostly of the Tigresses’ Team B players.
