University of the Philippines tied the University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses on top of Group A leaderboard and secured at least a quarterfinals berth playoff.
The University of the Philippines secured at least a quarterfinals playoff after yet another “ugly” win as the Lady Maroons pushed College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers on the brink of elimination with a 25-20, 25-12, 25-17 win Monday night in Group B of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Maroons tied the University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses on top of the group’s leaderboard with a 2-0 win-loss record and are a win away from occupying a seat in the next round.
Coming off a straight sets win over San Beda Lady Red Spikers more than a week ago, head coach Jerry Yee saw no improvement with his team’s game calling it ugly after describing their conference debut sloppy.
“Slow start and slow finish di ba? E yun eh. Sumasabay tayo sa tempo ng iba so pangit at boring (ang laro). Both sides medyo ganoon,” he said.
Diana Carlos led the Diliman-based squad with 12 points she collected from 10 kills, a kill block and an ace while Isa Molde and Nicole Tiamzon scored nine each.
The Lady Blazers absorbed their third straight loss in as many outings and could get receive the boot with another defeat or a win by Far Eastern University (1-0).
CSB, the reigning NCAA champion known for its solid net defense, only had one kill block coming from guest player and setter Djanel Cheng.
It was a disappointing outing for Jeannette Panaga and Janine Navarro, who after scoring 14 points each their loss to UST, were limited to only five and two markers, respectively.
