Nagmamadali ang kalaban, nagmamadali rin kami --- Foton coach Vilet Ponce De Leon
Momentum was already on the side of Foton heading into the fifth set against F2 Logistics in Game 1 of their best-of-three 2016 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
But everything slipped away from the hands of the Tornadoes.
“Medyo nagkanya-kanya na doon sa fifth set,” said Foton head coach Vilet Ponce De Leon.
The reigning Grand Prix champion was too aggressive in the fifth as the Tornadoes played under the pace of the Cargo Movers.
And they paid dearly as the Tornadoes fell to a 0-1 series deficit after absorbing a 20-25, 14-25, 25-9, 25-20, 10-15 loss Thursday night at The Arena in San Juan.
Foton recovered from two sets down and tied F2 Logistics, 3-3, early in the fifth before letting the Cargo Movers mount an 8-3 rally for a five-point lead that the Tornadoes weren’t able to comeback from.
“Maybe masyadong eager. Parang kapag nanigas talaga sila, sobrang na-excite that happens e,” said Ponce De Leon. “Sabi nga namin, ‘yung third set saka yung fourth set it was really good. Pati 'yung kilos nila sumunod na sila, pero 'yung fifth set parang nagkaroon na sila ng sarili nilang diskarte sa loob eh.”
The Tornadoes committed 39 errors including the long cross court attack by Cherry Rondina that closed the two-hour, 19-minute match. It didn’t help that Foton gave away 14 aces including six in the opening frame.
“We have to hold our game together kasi kailangan ma-control namin ang laro. Yes mayroon kaming opponent and they have their own pace but we have to follow our pace every time the ball is on our side,” said Ponce De Leon, who has a day to prepare her team for Game 2 on Saturday. “Nagmamadali ang kalaban, nagmamadali rin kami. That’s not supposed to happen.”
“Noong third and fourth set hawak namin ang pace but pagdating sa fifth set nagmamadali. Hindi ko alam siguro gabi na gusto ng umuwi o whatever pero sabi ko nga we have all the time pinaghirapan na natin ito we cannot let this go away ng basta-basta,” she added.
Despite the loss the mentor said that they are still in contention and the team is positive that they can force a decider.
“Buhay pa kami yun ang iniisip namin and we’re gonna take this one game at a time, one set at a time, one point at a time,” Ponce De Leon said.
