Tigresses, Lady Maroons collide in battle of unbeaten teams

Only one team between University of the Philippines and University of Sto. Tomas will remain unscathed after their marquee match.
The quarterfinals-bound University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses and University of the Philippines Lady Maroons put their unbeaten records on the line in Group B preliminary round of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference on Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Both squads hold perfect 2-0 win-loss cards and are already assured of seats to the next round together with idle Far Eastern University.
Game time is at 6:00 p.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.
Meanwhile, a no-bearing Group B game between winless and eliminated teams College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers and San Beda Lady Red Spikers is slated at 4:00 p.m. in the curtain-raiser.
UP and UST are expected to still go at it even after punching their tickets into the next round.
The top three teams in each bracket will advance in the round robin quarterfinals with carrying their group stage records. Their wins against eliminated opponents in the group stage will be deducted from their carryover record. Teams will then take on the squads coming from the other bracket.
This makes the game between the Tigresses and the Lady Maroons important.
UST is coming off a 25-20, 25-17, 25-27, 25-17, win over CSB last week behind another stellar performance from high school guest player Eya Laure.
The Tigresses will also bank on EJ Laure, Ria Meneses and Cherry Rondina to claim their third win.
But it won’t be an easy hunt for the Espana-based squad.
UP is riding the crest of its convincing win against the Lady Blazers, 25-20, 25-12, 25-17, last Monday and the Lady Maroons are yet to drop a set in this tournament.
Isa Molde, Justine Dorog, Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola are all performing well for the Diliman-based squad.
Still UP coach Jerry Yee is wary of how dangerous the Tigresses are especially the Laure sisters.
“Masayang naglalaro sina Eya at EJ. Yun ang mahirap kalaban, ‘yung mga laru-laro lang and then gumagana,” he said.
The NCAA champion Lady Blazers and Lady Red Spikers bowed out of contention after dropping their first three games. Both teams are just looking to exit the tournament with a morale-boosting win heading into the NCAA season.
