Lady Eagles soar for first win
AT LAST! Ateneo de Manila celebrates its first win.

Ateneo de Manila shook off a slow start and kept its flickering quarterfinals bid alive with a 27-25, 25-13, 25–16 win over the hapless University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas on Monday night in Group A of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Lady Eagles finally barged in the win column after dropping their first two assignments while officially shutting the door for the Lady Altas in the race for the last two slots in the next round.

The Katipunan-based squad struggled in the opening set before finding its groove to send Perpetual reeling to a 0-3 record.

A win by the Lady Eagles against unbeaten National University on Saturday will give Ateneo a shot for a playoff for the last quarters spot.

Bea De Leon led the Lady Eagles with 12 points Ana Gopico had 10 kills in her total of 11 markers.

Veteran setter Jia Morado played through a flu, coming off the bench to dish out 25 excellent sets for the Lady Eagles, who played sans injured hitter Jho Maraguinot (shin).

Ateneo was buried early in the opening set 5-10 before mounting a rally to tie the frame at 11. From there it was a see-saw battle before Perpetual got at set point first, 24-23. The Lady Eagles took the set advantage 25-24 before Cindy Imbo tied it at 25. Ateneo scored the next two points to wrap the set.

Perpetual again controlled the beginning of the second set holding 13-12 lead only to see Ateneo rampage with 13 unanswered points to take a 2-0 match lead.

Ateneo raced to a 16-4 gap in the third to take the fight out of the Las Pinas-based squad.

Lourdwa Clemente had eight markers while Cindy Imbo got seven for the Lady Altas.
