Full strength Far Eastern University tests the mettle of shorthanded University of Sto. Tomas.
Shorthanded University of Sto. Tomas is out to get a bounce back win on Wednesday against Far Eastern University in Group A action of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Both already assured of seats in the round robin quarterfinals, the Tigresses and Lady Tamaraws are looking to bring a good carryover record to the next phase.
UST, who will play for the second straight game without top hitters Cherry Rondina and EJ Laure, is particularly desperate to score a victory in the 6:00 p.m. match that will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.
Rondina and Laure are both playing in the championship of a club tournament.
The Espana-based squad absorbed its first loss of the conference last Saturday, bowing down to another quarterfinalist University of the Philippines, 19-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 6-15. The loss handed UST a 0-1 slate in their quarterfinals carryover record.
A win by the Tigresses will give them a better chance in the Final Four race in the next phase. Another loss will mean that the Tigresses need to sweep all its three games in the quarterfinals to advance in the semis.
High school phenom and guest player Eya Laure, who is averaging 18.3 points per game, and Ria Meneses, who in two games normed 13.5 points, will share the bulk of the scoring load for UST.
And it will be a difficult task for the Tigresses.
The Lady Tams are coming off a weeklong vacation since ramming San Beda, 23-25, 25-6, 25-11, 25-14, for a 2-0 record.
FEU has three players averaging in double figures. Veteran Toni Basas is averaging 14.5 points per game, Bernadeth Pons has 12.5 points per outing while Remy Palma is scoring 11.5 markers per game.
A win will give the Lady Tams a 1-0 quarterfinals carryover slate and a high morale heading into their prelims-closing assignment on Saturday against UP.
