Fighter kaya nakalaban pa rin -- SSC-R assistant coach Clint Malazo on under the weather Grethcel Soltones
San Sebastian College star Grethcel Soltones played through a fever and still managed to come up with the same production she usually give in the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference.
The Lady Stag, who is entering her last playing year, posted 23 points as SSC-R kicked University of Sto. Tomas out of the semifinals race Wednesday night with a 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19, to open the team’s quarterfinals campaign at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
“Medyo masakit lang ang lalamunan ko at may konting sinat lang mula kahapon,” said Soltones.
SSC-R assistant coach Clint Malazo was all praises with the Open Conference Most Valuable Player for stepping up despite of being under the weather.
Soltones, who leads the league in the statistical race, had 21 spikes, one kill block and an ace and also played a big role on defense with nine excellent receptions for the Recto-based squad.
“Kanina bago mag-warm up humingi pa ng Biogesic talagang siguro adrenaline na lang saka fighter kaya nakalaban pa rin,” said Malazo.
The hard-hitting Catmon, Cebu native according to the deputy of on vacation head coach Roger Gorayeb said that Soltones assured him that she can play and was not bothered by slight fever.
“Wala naman (akong plano na ‘di siya palaruin) kasi masigla pa naman siya eh,” he said. “Ang pinaka plano ko pa lang sa kanya i-sub siya kung nasa likod, eh kaya lang na-ano akong mag-sub kasi masyadong dikit kung medyo lumayo sana nakapagpahinga.”
“Tinanong ko naman siya, kaya mo ba? Kaya niya naman daw, sige. Mas nararamdaman niya ‘yan, alam niya ang katawan niya,” he added.
Soltones had plenty of help from her teammates against the Tigresses.
Katherine Villegas and Joyce Sta. Rita had nine markers each, Nikka Dalisay chipped in with seven while libero Alyysa Eroa had 30 digs and 13 excellent receptions.
“Sobrang nakakatuwa kasi mas naging matured ang iba sa amin unlike before kasi parati na lang sa akin ang bola last time. Mas nagtutulungan na kami as a whole,” said Soltones, the reigning NCAA MVP but yet to win a title for the Lady Stags.
