Mag-leave of absence kami.
University of Sto. Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes is not dwelling on the fact that after participating in 14 conferences, the Tigresses for the first time failed to advance in the Final Four of the V-League.
The Espana-based squad was booted out of contention for a spot in the Collegiate Conference semifinals of the league’s 13th season Wednesday night at the hands of the San Sebastian College Lady Stags, 20-25, 18-25, 25-16, 19-25, as the Tigresses absorbed its second straight loss in the quarterfinals for a 0-4 carryover record.
UST, which is on a four-game slump overall since the prelims, fielded a core composed of their Team B, recruited a pair of high school players as guest players and lost two of its top veteran hitters midway in their campaign.
The Tigresses won their first two games in the preliminary round but lost the next four after power-spikers and court leaders Cherry Rodina and EJ Laure opted to play in a club league and in an international tournament during the slump. With reinforcement high school star Eya Laure and veteran middle Ria Meneses left to carry the scoring load, UST’s direction dove southward.
Hindi naman kami puwedeng magsabi na wala si ganito, wala si ganyan,” said Reyes after the game at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The incoming second year mentor of the Tigresses said that what’s important are the exposure, lessons and experience his team will gain in their stint.
“Nandito kami, we don’t care about kung anong mangyayari. Yun ang unang-unang intension namin,” he said.
Reyes added that they could’ve just skipped this with the raw resources that they have but they didn’t because it will benefit the team in terms of improvement.
Mag-leave of absence kami. Kaya lang sign of kaduwagan ‘yun kung hindi kami sasali,” the coach said.
In the past 13 conferences that the Tigresses joined, UST never missed a semifinals stint. They won six titles including a three-peat in 2009-2010 seasons, four runner ups, a third place and a pair of fourth place finishes including last season’s Collegiate Conference.
No. 1 exposure.
UST is not taking their fate in a negative angle but rather looking at its positive side. It doesn’t matter if the team lost more games than won matches.
“Kasi the more na magtago kami, cowardice na ang dating sa amin nyan. Hindi kami sasali just to make safe dahil kulang ang tao? Umalis ang mga player namin? Hindi dahilan ‘yun,” said Reyes, who in a few months will try to bring his team back in the UAAP Final Four after missing the cut in the past four years.
Laro ito eh,” he said.
