University of Sto. Tomas battle for survival in quarterfinals showdown with San Sebastian College.
Shorthanded University of Sto. Tomas fights for dear life on Wednesday against a solid San Sebastian College-Recoletos side in the quarterfinals of the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Tigresses are already in a precarious situation of getting the boot with a 0-3 carryover record after dropping its quarterfinals opener in straight sets at the hands of the defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs two days ago.
UST will be shown the exit door with another loss in their 4:00 p.m. showdown with the Lady Stags.
The game will air live over ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD Channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.
Playing without veteran hitters Cherry Rondina and EJ Laure, who are both in Thailand for a pocket tournament that also serves as part of Foton Pilipinas’ build up for the AVC Asian Club Championship, the Espana-based squad is on a three-game losing slump.
UST absorbed a 21-25, 27-29, 13-25, drubbing from NU to start the quarterfinals with only high school guest player Eya Laure scoring in double figures to lead the Tigresses.
The Tigresses will need to squeeze more production from Ria Meneses and the rest of the crew to save their campaign.
But it will be a steep uphill battle for UST with the Lady Stags beaming with confidence after two straight wins.
Behind league-leading scorer Grethcel Soltones, Katherine Villegas and Denice Lim SSC-R defeated Ateneo de Manila in straight sets before outlasting Technological Institute of the Philippines in five sets to close the prelims.
The trio will spearhead the Lady Stags’, who holds a 1-1 carryover record, attempt to shore up its chances of advancing in the semifinals.
