Ako na mismo ang nag-volunteer kay coach na ialis na ako sa loob kasi kapos na talaga -- Grethcel Soltones of San Sebastian College
Grethcel Soltones admitted that it was her that asked San Sebastian College assistant coach Clint Malazo to take her out of the game when Far Eastern University was pulling away in the third set.
Suffering for almost four days from sore throat and slight fever, Soltones felt that needed to take a rest. After all the game was already of their hands.
Soltones called it a day when the Lady Stags were buried deep to an 8-20 hole in the third frame as SSC-R dropped a 25-27, 20-25, 11-25, defeat at the hands of the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws Saturday in the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference quarterfinals at The Arena in San Juan.
“Ako na mismo ang nag-volunteer kay coach na ialis na ako sa loob kasi kapos na talaga,” said Soltones, who finished with only 12 points – all from kills.
The Recto-based squad slid to 2-2 carryover win-loss record and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
“Pero it’s not an excuse naman. Siyempre tatanungin talaga ako kung bakit ako inalis,” said the Open Conference Most Valuable Player. “Nagkulang lang talaga kami.”
SSC-R led early in the first two sets before watching the Lady Tams, who tied the defending champion National University at 3-1 slate to secure at least a playoff for a semis spot, overtake them on both frames with a scorching run.
“Malalaki din kasi sila and they are one of the best offensive teams sa UAAP,” said Soltones. “Hindi naman kami masyadong down sa ngayon kasi magaling naman talaga sila eh.”
The Lady Stags failed to score even a single kill block and were poor in reception as FEU scored 12 aces.
“Ang pinakanahirapan kami is sa blocking and sa depensa which is sobrang kulang kami kanina,” she said.
Soltones added they paid dearly for letting their momentum slip away.
“’Yun ang weakness namin eh. Lalamang kami tapos magiging tabla, then lamang, tabla. ‘Di kasi namin masyadong control eh,” said the incoming SSC-R senior.
“Parating sinasabi sa amin ni coach na makikipagdikdikan kami which is kanina nga walang nagli-lead sa team, ewan ko walang masyadong nagsasalita,” she added. “(Di rin ako makapagsalita) kasi sa throat ko rin, bawal pa ako na masyadong magsigaw kasi may sakit pa rin ako until now.”
The Lady Stags are in danger of missing the cut for the next round with another loss on Wednesday against University of the Philippines.
