Iniisip ko na lang kailangan ko mag-perform para makatulong sa team -- FEU's Bernadeth Pons
Far Eastern University outside hitter Bernadeth Pons proved that she’s one tough Lady Tamaraw.
Still recovering from a flu that made her skip a game almost two weeks ago, the incoming fifth year FEU star towed the Lady Tamaraws past the San Sebastian College Lady Stags, 27-25, 25-20, 25-11, Saturday to bounce back from its quarterfinals opening day loss in the 13th V-League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Pons scored 17 points anchored on 16 vicious attacks despite still feeling under the weather to help FEU tie their tormentor National University at 3-1 win-loss record and secure at least a semis seat playoff.
“Si Pons, may ubo, sipon, until now may ubo pa siya tapos may lagnat pa. Actually ‘yung game namin sa UP meron na siya (sakit) noon kailangan lang gamitin and the ‘yun nga ‘yung sa NU (di pa siya 100%),” said Lady Tams coach Shaq Delos Santos.
After their loss to NU which snapped the team’s four-game winning run, Pons, who in the said five-set loss scored 12, took it to herself to perform better even if she’s sick and all.
“Mind over matter na lang sa lahat ng bagay,” she said. “Iniisip ko na lang kailangan ko mag-perform para makatulong sa team.”
Pons sat out FEU’s win over University of Sto. Tomas last August 17 because of flu. She had a quiet outing in a five-set win over University of the Philippines to end the preliminary round.
“Medyo mabigat pa nung pakiramdam ko kasi kakabalik lang ng ensayo tapos game agad,” Pons said.
The Lady Tams can formally enter the best-of-three Final Four with a win against the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles on August 31.
