Ateneo de Manila skipper Michelle Morente was about to answer a question thrown by a reporter when Lady Eagle Bea De Leon shouted while walking out of their locker room inside The Arena in San Juan.
“’Yung totoo nilabhan kasi ni Mitch knee pads niya!” De Leon yelled in a jest.
“OK kasi may (pamahiin kami) na ang baho kasi ng knee pads ko for the past few games,” she was forced to admit.
“Sinabi ko kasi na hindi ko lalabhan ang knee pads ko kapag nanalo tayo. E nilabhan ko siya kagabi so sinasabi nila na natalo kami dahil sa knee pads ko,” Morente continued. “I don’t know kung may connection. Pero ‘yun ‘yun.”
Her knee pads’ fault or not, Ateneo absorbed a painful 18-25, 25-14, 20-25, 18-25, loss at the hands of their Katipunan Avenue neighbor University of the Philippines Saturday to open their 13th V-League Collegiate Conference quarterfinals campaign.
The loss snapped the Lady Eagles’ three-game winning run, which includes a four-set quarterfinals ticket playoff victory over the Technological Institute of the Philippines last Monday, and dropped the Lady Eagles to 1-2 carryover slate.
Morente finished with 15 points on 10 attacks and five service aces for Ateneo.
“Siguro na-rattle din kami,” Morente said.
The Lady Eagles committed 34 errors, had four kill blocks lesser than UP’s eight and lacked the maturity and composure inside he court.
“As you can see naman UP is really a strong team like sobrang hands down ako sa kanila. Sobrang lakas ng depensa nila, sobrang lakas nilang pumalo. Lahat ng palo namin nakukuha nila, receive nila lahat sobrang solid talaga,” Morente said. “Siguro sobrang naangatan nila kami. Hindi kami nakasabay sa kanila.
Ateneo is now forced to win its remaining pair of quarters matches against University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University for a chance to advance in the best-of-three Final Four.
“Don’t expect anything na lang from us,” she said. “We’re trying our best to do everything that we could to win. Even coach Tai (Bundit) din naman he’s pushing us every day in training. Sana yung mga pinaghirapan namin lumabas din sa games.”
The loss might have given the Lady Eagles a hard time to advance in the next round, but the ladies in blue sure know how to see the silver lining of it.
It may be a funny superstition but Morente for sure will now know what to do with those knee pads.
