University of the Philippines' Kathy Bersola hammered a kill against San Sebastian College.
University of the Philippines broke the will of the San Sebastian College Lady Stags with a brutal whipping in the third set before the Lady Maroons formally marched into the semifinals with a 25-17, 23-25, 25-5, 25-18, win on Wednesday in the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Maroons closed their quarterfinals campaign with a carryover 3-2 win-loss record to join the defending champion National University and Far Eastern University.
Skipper Kathy Bersola scored 20 points from 10 kills, eight kill blocks and a pair of aces for the Diliman-based squad while Nicole Tiamzon and Diana Carlos had 13 and 11 markers, respectively. Marian Buitre finished with 10 while Isa Molde got eight for the Lady Maroons.
“We played not wanting to lose, pangit ‘yun pero at least somehow motivated,” said UP coach Jerry Yee, whose squad entered the conference Final Four for the first time since missing the cut last year.
UP broke a 1-1 match deadlock with a strong showing in the third frame, utterly destroying the Lady Stags with a 10-1 start before eventually taking set and shaming SSC-R with the lowest set output in the conference since the San Beda Red Spikers scored only six in a 25-23, 6-25, 11-25, 14-25, loss to Far Eastern University back in the preliminary round.
SSC-R dropped to 2-3 slate and will still need to wait for the result of the FEU-Ateneo de Manila match later.
Grethcel Soltones and Denice Lim scored 15 points each while Joyce Sta. Rita had 10 as the Lady Stags dropped to 2-3 card.
In case FEU wins the match, Ateneo and SSC-R will face-off in a playoff for the last semis ticket. A win by Ateneo will complete the semis cast.
