University of Sto. Tomas head coach Kungfu Reyes was all praises to his second year player Carla Sandoval for stepping up to the challenge to fill in the scoring void left by star hitter Cherry Rondina.

The incoming sophomore hitter posted 19 points in the Tigresses debut in the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference Saturday as UST grounded the veteran Philippine Air Force Lady Jet Spikers, 25-15, 20-25, 25-13, 25-21, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Sandoval smashed 18 of the Tigresses 60 total kills and held her own against the more experienced players of Air Force.

Sandoval’s explosion lessened the pressure on incoming third year EJ Laure to deliver points with Rondina and Caitlyn Viray out to play in the 79th UAAP beach volleyball tournament while team captain Pam Lastimosa and Christine Francisco skipped the match because of exams.

The 19-year-old recruit from Angelicum College said that all the Spartan-like training she went through paid off.

“Hard talaga ang training namin eh,” she said.

Reyes said that she saw in Sandoval eyes the determination to improve her game and she’s already reaping the rewards.

Lalo na ngayon na nag-player of the game pa siya so good motivation for her.”
