Cherry Rondina can take her time to rest and relax after a hard-fought campaign on the sands.
University of Sto. Tomas can afford to give the newly-crowned 79th UAAP beach volleyball champion and Most Valuable Player a long vacation with her reliever sophomore Carla Sandoval shining in the Tigresses’ unbeaten rampage in the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference.
The 19-year-old hitter led the Espana-based squad with 14 points Monday night when UST swept UAAP rival University of the Philippines, 28-26, 25-19, 25-18, for a 4-0 win-loss record to remain on top of standings. UST clinched at least a playoff for a Final Four spot.
UST coach Kungfu Reyes praised the performance of Sandoval, who is averaging 13 points per game and moved to third place in the scoring statistics with 52 points overall behind teammate EJ Laure (67) and Bureau of Customs’ Alyssa Valdez (57).
Sandoval said in a previous interview that she went through Spartan-like training sessions that most of the time reduced her to tears. All of her hard work did pay off.
With Sandoval doing a great job for the Tigresses, Reyes won’t be needing Rondina any time soon.
Besides, Rondina will need to slowly get back into rhythm playing on the taraflex court and in an air-conditioned venue after spending time under the scorching sun playing with partner Jem Gutierrez on the powdery sand.
