University of the Philippines' Diana Carlos (no. 18) and Marian Buitre put up a wall to stop the attack of Laoag hitter Grethcel Soltones.
University of the Philippines banked on veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Marian Buitre to snap a two-game skid with a 25-20, 27-25, 11-25, 25-20, win over the Laoag Power Smashers Monday night in the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Tiamzon finished with 15 points anchored on 13 attacks while Buitre registered 13 markers coming off eight spikes, four kill blocks and an ace to help the Lady Maroons get back on the winning track for a 2-3 win-loss card. Diana Carlos made 10 after a four-point outing in a straight sets loss to Pocari Sweat last Saturday.
“Medyo mababa rin ang energy ng kabila naman eh. Kami we just played our game,” said UP coach Jerry Yee.
Kathy Bersola and sophomore Isa Molde scored nine markers each for the Lady Maroons, who strengthened their defense in front of the net for 12 kill blocks and cashed on the service line with eight aces.
After taking the opening set, the Diliman-based squad trailed the whole second frame and stared on a 23-24 set point disadvantage from a Grethcel Soltones kill. Buitre saved a set point with a backline hit to spark the closing three-point spurt of UP to steal the frame.
The Lady Maroons erased a disappointing third set collapse with a strong performance in the fourth, building a 19-15 advantage.
Soltones and Jema Galanza teamed up to narrow the gap 19-17 and again at 22-20 after Tiamzon’s miscue. Tiamzon made up for her mistake by sparking the last three points of the Lady Maroons with back-to-back hits to seal the match.
Soltones hammered 17 kills in her 18-point performance while Aiko Urdas and Wenneth Eulalio finished with 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for Laoag which dropped to 2-2 card.
