Pocari Sweat eyes semis sweep
Pocari Sweat goes for the jugular on Monday to advance in it second straight Finals appearance.

Pocari Sweat is determined to end the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference semifinals series against University of Sto. Tomas on Monday.

“We’re going for it on Monday sa Game 2,” said Lady Warriors coach Rommel Abella.

The Open Conference champion will march into battle inside the PhilSports Arena looking to advance in their second straight championship appearance.

Opening serve is set at 4:00 p.m. match and will air live over S+A channel 23 and S+A HD channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.

Pocari Sweat swept the young Tigresses, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22, last Saturday to take the lead in the best-of-three series and to extend their sizzling winning run to seven. They also defeated UST to close the elimination round last week in four sets.

Another win will give the Lady Warriors the first best-of-three Finals berth and will await the winner between BaliPure and Bureau of Customs in the other semis pairing.

“Hopefully makuha naming (ang panalo) and hopefully ‘yung start namin ganoon pa rin. ‘Yung intensity ng game namin at ng mga players sana ganoon pa rin,” said Abella. “Sila rin naman kasi nakita naming na gusto talaga nilang manalo eh. Alam naman namin na magiging madali para sa aming mga coaches kung ano ‘yung mga magiging adjustments, though minor lang naman ‘yun, but still sa kanila naman nanggagaling ang eagerness na manalo.”

American imports Bre Mackie, who scored 19 points in the series opener, and Andrea Kacsits will spearhead the series sweep attempt of Pocari Sweat with locals Michele Gumabao, Myla Pablo, Desiree Dadang, Fil-Am setter Iris Tolenada and libero Melissa Gohing providing support.

Team captain Gumabao wants to finish the series as quickly as they can.

The Lady Warriors in the Open Conference needed to comeback from a semis series deficit against BaliPure and again in the Finals against Philippine Army.

“Sobrang determined (kaming tapusin na) kasi ayaw na naming mag-extend and series gaya ng nangyari last (Open) Conference na talagang paguran talaga,” said Gumabao, who had 10 points last game. “Kung kaya naming i-preserve yung energy namin para sa Finals ipe-preserve namin.”

“And yun naman naman ang pinagpapraktisan namin, ‘yun naman ang rason kaya kami sumali sa V-League para manalo ulit ng championship,” she added. “So ‘yung goal namin kailangan sa easiest and the fastest way magampanan naming ‘yun, ‘yun ang gagawin namin.”

Game 3 if needed is on Wednesday.
