Ngayon aasa kami pero kailangan namin trabahuin hanggat di pa tapos ang laban, lalaban at lalaban kami, -- UST coach Kungfu Reyes
University of Sto. Tomas is not losing hope in its bid for a Finals berth in the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference.
Down 0-1 in the best-of-three semifinals series against the taller and more experienced Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors, Tigresses head coach Kungfu Reyes is optimistic that they’ll take Game 2 on Monday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
“Sana magkita-kita pa tayo ng Wednesday para Game 3 naman,” said Reyes after UST’s 16-25, 18-25, 22-25 series opener loss to the Lady Warriors last Saturday. “We’re being optimistic ‘yun ang kailangan naming panghawakan sa ngayon kailangan naming umasa.”
Game 2 is scheduled at 4:00 p.m. and will air live over S+A channel 23 and S+A HD channel 166 and via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/vleague.
“Against all odds na ‘yung laban na ‘yun (sa game 2). Bigayan na ‘yun. meron kaming preparation para sa mga bata. So hopefully, mag-materialize by Monday,” added Reyes, who played for UST’s volleyball team in the UAAP with Lady Warriors coach Rommel Abella not so long ago.
The Espana-based squad is down with a two-game losing streak all coming at the hands of Pocari Sweat including a four-set loss to end the elimination round last Wednesday. UST lost three in their last four outings overall.
The Lady Warriors dominated Game 1 and the Tigresses, who captured the University Games crown recently, had no answer to Pocari Sweat’s American imports 6-foot-2 open spiker Bre Mackie and 6-foot-4 Andrea Kacsits.
It didn’t help that only Cherry Rondina scored in double digits with EJ Laure held down to only eight points after averaging almost 17 points per game during the elims. Skipper Pam Lastimosa and Ria Meneses combined for only 13 points.
“‘Yung skills nandoon na eh. Talagang kailangan lang humugot pa kami,” said Reyes. “Wala pa masyadong hugot sa ibang kasama naming. Dami naming attempts pero ‘yung successful na kuha iilan lang. Pipilitin namin ‘yung attempts na ‘yun na i-convert din namin sa points at least kahit kalahati malaking bagay. So with that, sa tulong ng ibang player ma-extend namin ‘yung series.”
Reyes pointed out that they need to win as a team to force a decider.
“Ngayon aasa kami pero kailangan namin trabahuin hanggat di pa tapos ang laban, lalaban at lalaban kami,” he said. Tuluy-tuloy lang hanggang sa makakuha kami ng set, manalo ng game.”
