Lady Blazers, Lionesses share early lead

Jeannette Panaga and Ranya Musa powered the defending champion St. Benilde as the Lady Blazers’ staved off the upset-conscious Letran Lady Knights, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-7, 15-12, Sunday for their second straight win in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Panaga, last year’s Finals Most Valuable Player, and Musa delivered 19 points each to help the Lady Blazers recover from a sloppy start. Musa smashed 13 kills with four kill blocks and a pair of aces to while Panaga hammered 10 attacks coupled with five aces and four kill blocks.
Rachel Austerio finished with 10 markers for the Taft-based squad, which is coming off a 17-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17, win over Perpetual Help last Monday.
The Lady Knights surprised CSB in the first two frames but failed to sustain their momentum as the Lady Blazers were able to regroup to turn the tables around.
Mikaela Lopez and Glayssa Faith Torres scored and 18 and 12 points, respectively, for Letran, which dropped its second straight loss after a five-set opening day setback against Lyceum of the Philippines.
In the other women’s result, the San Beda Red Lionesses pulled off a shocker against Perpetual Help, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, to seize a share of the lead with CSB.
Francesca Racraquin unloaded 14 kills while Nieza Viray scattered 11 for the Lionesses second win in as many outings.
The Lady Altas fell to 0-2.
In the men's side, CSB nailed its first win in two outings after routing Letran 25-19, 25-13, 26-24, behind Johnvic De Guzman’s 15 points.
In the high school division, the Squires nipped the Junior Blazers, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19, for a 1-1 card.
