Baste, LPU join early leaders in four-way logjam
San Sebastian College and Lyceum of the Philippines bagged their second straight win in as many games.

San Sebastian College and Lyceum of the Philippines joined early leaders defending champion St. Benilde and giant-slayer San Beda in the women's division of the 92nd NCAA volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Stags overpowered Mapua, 25-13, 25-17, 25-13, Monday while the Lady Pirates pillaged Jose Rizal University, 25-23, 25-10, 25-21, for their second win in as many outings.

Reigning back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones did less than her usual load as she chipped in seven hits while Katherine Villegas and Nikka Mariel Dalisay led the way with nine and eight points, respectively, to help propel the Lady Stags to their second win in a row.

The lopsided win came several days after San Sebastian escaped past tough Arellano U with a come-from-behind 23-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-18, 15-12 triumph with the power-hitting Soltones powering her way to a season-best 25-point effort.

Meanwhile, Czarina Orros led the way for LPU with 12 points while La Rainne Fabay and Cherilyn Sindayen scored 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

The Lady Bombers dropped to 1-1 slate with Karen Montojo and Shola Alvarez scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively, in a lost cause.

The Lady Cardinals, who were led by Katrina Racelis' eight points, fell to their second straight defeat.

Earlier, Mapua trounced San Sebastian, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, to join San Beda on top with two wins apiece in the men's side.

Angelo Jose Pertierra paced the Cardinals with 17 points while Raven Evangelista and Alfredo Pagulong contributed 13 and 12.

LPU likewise defeated JRU, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 16-25, 16-14.

In juniors' action, reigning titlist Perpetual Help routed San Beda, 25-16, 25-14, 25-12, to seize the solo lead with a 2-0 (win-loss) slate.
