San Sebastian College kept a tight hold of the lead with its third straight win.
San Sebastian survived an upset-conscious Letran side, 28-26, 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7, Friday to claim a share of the lead with defending champion College of St. Benilde in the women's division of the 92nd NCAA volleyball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Reigning back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones and Joyce Sta. Rita led the way for the Lady Stags' third win in as many games with 15 points each.
Nikka Dalisay and Dangie Encarnacion scored 12 each while Katherine Villegas had 11 hits for the Lady Stags, who gave away an atrocious 46 points off their errors.
San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb, who missed their first two games because he was out of town, said his team was overconfident.
"It's a simple case of overconfidence that it almost cost us the game," said Gorayeb. "This is a single-round robin elimination and all the games here matter. Every game is a championship game."
It was another heartbreaker for the Lady Knights as they absorbed their third straight five-set defeat after losing to Lyceun of the Philippines and CSB.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University bounced back after their setback last game with a 25-14, 25-16, 26-24, win over Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals for the Lady Bomber’s second win in three games.
In the men’s division,
SSC-R made it a twin victory over Letran with a 16-25, 25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 15-13 for a 1-2 slate tied with its victim and JRU, which escaped with a 13-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 15-8, win over last year’s runner-up EAC.
The Generals fell to 0-3 slate.
In juniors' action, Letran trounced San Sebastian, 25-12, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, to improve to 2-1.
The Staglets slid to their second loss in as many games.
