San Sebastian College preserved its pristine record Monday but not after surviving a tough challenge from Jose Rizal University in the third set of the Lady Stags’ 25-15, 25-10, 25-23, win in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Down 7-13 in the third set, SSC-R coach Roger Gorayeb was forced to put four of his starters including back-to-back Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones back on the court to extinguish the Lady Bombers rally to end 2016 with a perfect 6-0 record.
Soltones finished with 17 points highlighted by 16 of SSC-R’s total of 49 attacks. Nikka Dalisay had 12 markers while Katherine Villegas and Joyce Sta. Rita combined for 13 points.
Gorayeb expressed his disappointment with his second unit after their early third set collapse.
“’Di kumikilos ang iba eh. Hindi naglalaro ng mahusay ang iba kaya maoobliga ka na gamitin ulit ‘yung first six mo,” he said. “Hindi naman si Grethcel ang bubuhay diyan eh, ang daming player.”
The multi-titled mentor said he’s giving exposure to his bench to prepare the squad heading into their dangerous final elimination round stretch where they will meet Peretual Help on January 11, Lyceum of the Philippines on Jan. 23 before the rematch against their last year Finals tormentor College of St. Benilde on Jan. 25.
But it almost backfired.
“Ang third set lagi ina-allocate ko sa kanila (bench), inyo ‘yan ayusin ninyo,” Gorayeb added. “Hindi naman pwedeng aasa ako sa anim.”
Gorayeb sent Soltones, Daureen Santos Nikka Dalisay and Joyce Sta. Rita back in the game midway in the third.
Soltones powered the Lady Stags back in front, 24-22, with a kill to cap a five-point burst after trailing 19-22. JRU saved a match point on an SSC-R error before Soltones sealed the victory with a crosscourt kill.
The Lady Bombers dropped to 2-4 record.
Rosalie Pepito and Shola Alvarez had 11 and eight points, respectively, for JRU.
