Alyssa Valdez and national team coach Francis Vicente reunited during the national team tryouts in Davao City.
Volleyball star Alyssa Valdez and her former high school coach Francis Vicente had an emotional meeting Saturday when the three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player arrived at the University of Southeastern Philippines for the last leg of tryout for the national team in Davao City.
It was a heart-warming meeting for the two with Valdez flashing a sweet smile before blessing the hand of the mentor that discovered the former Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagle when she was just a gem in the rough.

Valdez was among a group of aspirants that showed up for the last leg of the tryouts for the national squad that will see action in the Asian Women’s Senior Volleyball Championship and in the 29th Southeast Asian Games in August.
The 23-year-old hitter fulfilled her promise to join the tryouts called by the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc., flying from Thailand where she is currently playing for 3BB Nanornnont early Saturday to Manila before heading to Davao City for the afternoon session.
Vicente, who recruited Valdez together with the then hitter Kim Fajardo in Batangas to play for UST high school in the UAAP, drew criticisms from fans after insisting that the two-time UAAP women’s volleyball champion should undergo tryouts.
Valdez, who helped UST win the 2008-2010 high school titles under Vicente, was a part of the national team that participated in the Singapore SEA Games in 2015 and was the delegation’s flag-bearer during the traditional parade of nations.
The volleybelle was the star during the tryouts with fans packing the arena to watch her while other aspirant where obviously in awe at the sight of arguable the most popular volleyball player in this generation.
Macky Carino, the chief deputy of men’s national team coach Sammy Acaylar who was also there for their tryouts during early in the day, asked them: "Starstruck kayo 'day?"
A burst of laughter erupted.
The tryout is ongoing as of posting time.
The final list of the players chosen to join the pool will be announced by the end of the month.
