Santiago-Manabat's knee buckled when she landed after an off the block kill that put Foton ahead, 12-10, in the fifth set. She was stretchered out of the court grimacing in pain and underwent MRI test Saturday.
"Initial assessment po is grade two MCL and partial tear sa ACL pero papa-check pa namin ang resulta sa doctor kasi hindi pa po 'yun ang final reading and tomorrow pa po lalabas ang final reading ng MRI," according Santiago-Manabat’s sister and Foton team manager, Diane.
The final result will be released Monday.
Foton advanced in the round robin final phase of the short tournament. The Tornadoes open their campaign against Japanese guest team Kobe Shinwa University on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
With the possibility of Santiago-Manabat missing the final round, youthful Grethcel Soltones and Katherine Villegas and veteran Maika Ortiz will have to carry much of the scoring load for the Tornadoes.
“Siguro, it's a big adjustment sa kanila since we all know na mga bata pa ‘yung mga players namin and 12 lang line up ko so minus 1, 11 na lang sila,” said Santiago. “But I know everyone will step up and I hope na maging motivation pa sa kanila ‘yung nangyari sa captain nila.”
