Rebisco PSL Manila dropped a four-set match against Vientinbank-Vietnam.
UST-KAMENOGORSK, Kazakhstan -- Rebisco PSL Manila put up a gallant stand but Vietinbank’s might was too much as the Vietnamese side submit the Filipinas, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 25-14, Friday in the Asian Women’s Club Championships at Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace here.
Six-foot-5 Jaja Santiago again led the Pinays' offense with her powerful attacks but it was not enough to save the squad from falling to its second straight loss after absorbing a sweep Thursday at the hands of Hisamitsu Springs of Japan to open their campaign.
Santiago scored 17 points off 15 attacks, a kill block and an ace while Jovelyn Gonzaga and Abigail Marano each scored 10 markers each for Rebisco PSL Manila. Rachel Anne Daquis scored nine while Kim Fajardo dished out 48 excellent sets for the Pinay squad.
The Filipinas sneaked a set win against the Vietnamese to tie the match at 1-1. They even engaged Vietnam in a tight game early in the third before fizzling out in the closing stretch.
Smelling blood, Vietinbank poured a telling scoring burst midway in the fourth set to bury the Pinays, 13-23, and eventually clinch their first win in two games after dropping their opener against Tianjin Bohai Bank of China.
Dinh Thi Thuy led Vietnam with 24 points while Pham Thi Kim Hue and Le Thahn Thuy had 15 and 14 markers respectively.
Rebisco PSL Manila will take on the Chinese squad on Saturday.
