“Ian is the first Filipino table tennis player who made it to the Olympics. It is only fitting for us, the Philippine Superliga, to recognize her achievements by helping her in the biggest battle of her life. We hope that our little contribution will be a major help to her recovery -- PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico
The Philippine Superliga (PSL) is extending its helping hand to Olympian Ian Lariba.
PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico on Thursday said half of the ticket sales of the PSL All-Filipino Conference games on June 6 and 8 will be donated to Lariba, the Rio de Janeiro Olympics competitor who has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Aside from that, the league would also seek donation from spectators during the separate formal opening ceremony of the season on June 10 at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Tickets on June 10 will be free to the public.
Juico, the former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman and the incumbent president of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA), said this is the league’s way of paying it forward and recognizing the all the achievements of Lariba.
“Ian is the first Filipino table tennis player who made it to the Olympics,” said Juico, adding that the 22-year old Lariba had a celebrated collegiate career after emerging Athlete of the Year in Season 77 and 78 as well as Most Valuable Player in Season 75, 77 and 78 in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
“It is only fitting for us, the Philippine Superliga, to recognize her achievements by helping her in the biggest battle of her life. We hope that our little contribution will be a major help to her recovery."
Meanwhile, the league also conducted its drawing of lots to kick off the All-Filipino Conference.
Reigning champion F2 Logistics landed on the very tough Pool A together with powerhouse Petron, Cignal and Sta. Lucia Realty.
Pool B features Foton, Generika-Ayala, Cocolife and Cherrylume, which will be bannered by the stars of University of the East.
Based on the league format, those on the same group will figure in a single round robin. The top two teams in Pool A and Pool B will comprise Pool C while the bottom two in Pools A and B will compose Pool E.
There would be a crossover quarterfinal battle between member of Pool C and E with the survivors figuring in the semifinals to determine the finalists.
