Ang target ay makapasok sa quarterfinals. ‘Yun ‘yung target para mag-qualify kami sa susunod na Asian Cup -- National women's volleyball team coach Francis Vicente on their goal in the 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship

Philippine national women’s team head coach Francis Vicente aims to steer the squad to at least a quarterfinals spot in the 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship this coming August 9 to 17 at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna and at Muntinlupa Sports Complex.

Vicente pointed out that their target in the biennial volleyball meet is to make it into the Top 8 to earn a ticket to the the AVC Asian Cup next year.

“Ang target ay makapasok sa quarterfinals. ‘Yun ‘yung target para mag-qualify kami sa susunod na Asian Cup,” said Vicente Friday during the press conference of the Asian tilt at ABS-CBN.

The Philippines is bracketed in Pool A along with Hong Kong and Kazakhstan in the 14-country field. The Pinay spikers need to finish in the top two of the group stage to advance in the quarterfinals and secure a Top 8 finish.

The campaign however, won’t be a walk in a park for the nationals

“Medyo mabigat ‘yung mga kalaban dito. The way we experienced it sa China (AVC Seniors 2015),” added Vicente.

As part of their preparation for the Asian Senior tilt and the 29th Southeast Asian games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia slated for August 19 to 31, the women’s team will train in Japan from July 17 to August 2.

“Sobrang laking tulong kasi doon mo makikita ‘yung kulang pa ng team. Ako ang nakikita ko, as a coach, ‘yung problema ‘yung speed natin,” he said. “Kailangan (ayusin) ‘yung floor defense which is ‘yung Japan sobrang magaling. Makakatulong ng malaki ang pagpunta sa Japan.”

Bannering the tri-colors are team captain Mika Reyes, Alyssa Valdez, Jaja Santiago, Aby Marano, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Kim Fajardo, Rhea Dimaculangan, Maika Ortiz, Gen Casugod, Ces Molina, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Denden Lazaro and reserves Dawn Macandili and Kim Dy.
