Gumabao drops 27, Cocolife outlasts Generika-Ayala

IMUS CITY – Veterans Michele Gumabao and Joanne Bunag dug deep into their well of experience to tow Cocolife to a thrilling 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 19-25, 15-10 victory over Generika-Ayala in the classification phase of the Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference Tuesday night at the Imus City Sports Complex here.

Bunag and Gumabao were impressive in the clutch for the Asset Managers, who gained a chance to come up with a fifth-place finish.

Cocolife will face the winner between Sta. Lucia and Cherrylume in the battle for 5th to 6th places on Saturday at the De La Salle Sentrum in Lipa City on Saturday.

Gumabao, who won three titles with De La Salle University in the UAAP, delivered an electrifying 27-point performance built on 22 attacks and three aces while the battle-scarred former Philippine Army spiker in Bunag nailed 16 kills for 17 points.

More than anything else, they duo connived in the fifth set, turning a risky 5-9 edge into a 8-14 advantage before Bunag unloaded a booming kill from the middle to seal the overwhelming victory.

“The girls never gave up,” said Cocolife coach Kungfu Reyes, who is looking to steer the young team to its best finish after wounding up fifth out of the six teams in the recent Invitational Conference.

“We may be out (of title contention), hut we’re not yet giving up. We want to win because we want to finish the tournament on a high note.”

The Asset Managers ruled the attack department, 61-51, and the block category, 11-8. Although they have more errors, 35-24, it didn’t matter as Gumabao and Bunag refused to give up in the deciding set.

Shannen Palec also shone with 12 points while Wensh Tiu submitted 11 markers to support the seasoned duo of Gumabao and Bunag.

Meanwhile, Fiola Ceballos nailed 15 markers while Angeli Araneta and Patty Orendain had 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Lifesavers, who won started hot before falling apart with a four-game losing streak.

Generika-Ayala will face the loser in the Sta. Lucia-Cherrylume battle in the classification battle for 7th to 8th places also this weekend.
