A tight and hectic schedule including a number of tune-up games await the national men’s volleyball team in Suwon, South Korea.
The Pinoy spikers will have a two-week training camp in the historic city, famous for its fortresses and palaces, just north of the Seoul as part of their preparation for the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia a month from now.
The squad is set to depart on July 20 and will fly back to Manila on August 2 before heading to Kuala Lumpur for the biennial meet slated from August 19 to 31.
Nine tune up games against a Korean club team, U-19 national team and a university squad are scheduled for the nationals skippered by former College of St. Benilde star and reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player Johnvic De Guzman.
The team will use the facilities of Sungkyunkwan University for most of its training and tune up matches while some practice games will be at Hwasung volleyball court and Suwon Indoor Gym.
There will be only one rest day for the squad and a head coach Sammy Acaylar has one good reason for it.
“Magpupunta kami doon hindi para magbakasyon,” said Acaylar, who steered the national men’s team to its last podium finish back in 1991 when the Pinoys snared bronze medal. “Dito natin makikita kung ano pa ang dapat i-improve ng team and kung nasaan na yung level ng team. Chance din ito para mag-bonding ang team. Para ito sa bayan kaya hindi pwedeng mag-relax.”
The national team will take on club team Hwasung City on July 22 and July 27; the Korean national U-19 team on July 24, July 26 and July 31; Korean Universiade national squad on July 25, July 28 and August 1 and against SKK University squad on July 29.
Before they depart for their SoKor training camp, the Pinoys will play in a four-team pocket tournament in Imus from July 12 to 14 against an Imus selection team, Perpetual Help and visiting team from Macau.
The national team is composed of De Guzman, Bryan Bagunas, Relan Taneo, Geuel Asia, reigning Premier Volleyball League MVP Ranran Abdilla, Mark Alfafara, Alden Cabaron, Reyson Fuentes, Bonjomar Castel, Herschel Ramos, Jack Kalingking, Greg Dolor, Peter Quiel and John Eduard Carascal.
Abdilla is yet to receive his detailed service (release) from Philippine Air Force to join the team in their SoKor training.
