Cebu's Jade Becaldo and Rommel Pepito beat UST's Golden Pair of KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto, 21-18, 20-22, 20-18 to win the 2017 BVR National Championship.
Sta. Ana, Cagayan --- Better late than never.
A late addition to the 2017 Tour, Cebu's Jade Becaldo and Rommel Pepito ended up becoming as the first-ever men's Beach Volleyball Republic National Champions, besting UST's KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto Sunday in an epic three-set Final, 21-18, 20-22, 20-18, at Anguib Beach here.
Despite sweeping through the tournament, the Cebuano Hotshots were challenged in the championship by UST's Golden Pair after the reigning UAAP titlists became the first local team to push Becaldo and Pepito to three sets in the BVR circuit.
Close all throughout, Becaldo and Pepito lost their first two match points after Arbasto powered through with thunderous spikes.
UST managed to take over, taking a couple of match points themselves as the Tigers focused their attacks on Pepito.
However, Team Cebu's relentless approach would pay off in the end. A final point courtesy of Becaldo would end the deciding third set, 20-18.
"Masaya, tsaka proud ako sa partner ko kasi naka-survive," Becaldo said, pointing to Pepito who was out of breath following the marathon match.
"Para sa akin, masaya yung pressure, masaya yung ganun. Ako nag-enjoy ako sa ganun," Becaldo added, talking about the intense third set that decided the championship.
"Sobrang pressure, ako palagi tina-target ng bola. Pero masaya naman," Pepito said.
The National Championship win was Becaldo and Pepito's third straight title of the 2017 tour. The two first made their debut in Leg 6 at Ilocos, winning the men's Open division before taking another victory at their home province of Cebu in the final leg prior to Anguib Beach.
In Cagayan, Cebu plowed through the competition, including a dominating win in the semifinals against National University.
The Tigers meanwhile, lost a huge opportunity to extend their reign as the BVR Kings. The UST duo entered the National Championships as the Tour's most dominant team, winning three of the seven legs.
Before arranging a titular showdown against Becaldo and Pepito, the UST Golden Pair re-asserted their mastery against rivals FEU, scoring perhaps their best win against the Tamaraws with a 21-15, 21-11 victory in the semifinals.
Speaking of those Tamaraws, Jeremiah Barrica and Kevin Hadlocon took third place, taking down NU in the consolation, 21-19, 21-18.
Becaldo and Pepito won P50,000 on top of joining the Philippine team pool for the 2017 Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Games in Singapore. Joining Cebu in the lineup are UST and FEU.
