BINAN CITY, Laguna --- Chinese-Taipei broke the hearts of the Filipinos on a balmy Wednesday afternoon.

The Taiwanese denied the Philippines a chance to duplicate its best finish in the AVC Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship after walking away with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, win in the penultimate day of the 19th edition of the tournament’s classification round for 5th to 8th spot.

Chinese-Taipei pounced on the sluggish Pinays to take the first two sets before battling a stiff resistance from the home team backed by the home crowd that trooped the Alonte Sports Arena here in the third frame.

Meanwhile, Vietnam outlasted Kazakhstan, 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-5, in their classification round match.

The Taiwanese will face Vietnam in the final classification round match for the no. 5 spot Thursday.

The PHI, which scored its best finish in the biennial tournament back in 1983 in Fukuoka, Japan, books a rematch against first round tormentor Kazakhstan in the battle for 7th place.

Wu Wei-Hua scored 14 points, 12 coming off attacks, while Hsiao Hsiang-Ling and team captain Chen Wan-Ting, who punished the PHI in the third set, scored nine markers each for Chinese-Taipei.

Looking to extend the match, the Pinays raced to an early 10-4 lead to threaten the Taiwanese.
But the 2015 edition fourth placers countered with a scorching 7-0 rally to take the helm, 11-10.

The PHI countered to tie the set at 16 from an Aiza Maizo-Pontillas off speed but Chinese-Taipei answered with a 6-1 counter to silence the host team.

Alyssa Valdez led the PHI with 13 points, Jaja Santiago had 10 while Ces Molina finished with eight. Pontillas and Maika Ortiz chipped in with seven each for the Filipinas, who absorbed their fourth loss in six outings.
