Foton drubs Soltones-less Iriga City
Jaja Santiago of Foton soars for the kill against Iriga City.
Unbeaten defending champion Foton easily dismantled a Grethcel Soltones-less Iriga City, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19, Tuesday to keep a tight grip of the solo lead in the 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Taking advantage of an opponent limping after losing one of its top scorers to a one-year ban due to a rule infraction, the Tornadoes needed only 82 minutes to collect their fourth win in as many outings.
Serbian import Sara Klisura scored 12 points, 10 coming off attacks, while Jaja Santiago had 11 markers including five coming from the service line for Foton.
Setter Ivy Perez added eight points and 18 excellent sets while Maika Ortiz had seven markers.
"It's normal maybe, I like the win. I like winning every match," said Foton's Serbian coach Moro Branislav of their unbeaten run.
Serbian reinforcement Tamara Kmezic and Japanese import Saam Miyagawa carried most of the scoring load for the Oragons with 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Iriga City absorbed its first loss after a 5-set shocker over Sta. Lucia in its debut.
The Oragons lost their top local hitter after Soltones was slapped with a one-year ban and a fine of P50,000 for playing in the Premier Volleyball League All-Star Sunday last October 29, an infraction to the PSL's one-league policy.
An emergency meeting was called Tuesday regarding Iriga City's appeal to reconsider Soltones' ban but the PSL team owners unanimously voted to deny the request.
