F2 Logistics captures breakthrough Grand Prix title
The Cargo Movers won their second league title after ruling the 2016 All-Filipino Conference.
F2 Logistics captured its breakthrough 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix title but not after surviving a tough battle against Petron, 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, in the decider of their best-of-three Finals series at MOA Arena on Saturday.
Conference Most Valuable Player Maria Jose Perez led the Cargo Movers' assault as the Venezuelan import unleashed all of her 24 points off attacks to pulverize the defense of the Blaze Spikers but it was skipper Cha Cruz who hurt Petron the most.
Cruz, who was instumental in F2 Logistics impressive comeback in Game 2, scored 16 points from 13 spikes and three aces while spoiling the attacks of the Blaze Spikers with great floor defense, tallying 12 excellent receptions and eight digs. American Kennedy Bryan and reigning UAAP MVP MAjoy Baron finished with 12 points each.
The Cargo Movers pounced on the cold Blaze Spikers early before staving off Petron’s comeback attempt with a strong fourth set blitz to bag their first import-laden crown since joining the league last year.
The Ramil de Jesus-mentored squad returned the favor against the same team that kicked then off the throne in the All-Filipino Conference four months ago and completed an amazing comeback from a 0-1 series deficit.
"Masaya kasi 'yun na lang 'di ko na-achieve," said a very jubilant De Jesus, a many-time UAAP champion and 2016 PSL All-Filipino Conference titlist.
De Jesus stuck to the same rotation that saved them in Game 2, putting Bryan at opposite and switching Cruz's position to open. Petron was slow to adjust.
"'Yung rotation na 'yun di nila na-solusyunan, very effective naman," he said. "Nu'ng thirrd set balik lang sa normal possession, nag-relax lang mga bata pero di ko binago 'yung rotation."
The Blaze Spikers avoided a sweep after taking the third set but again saw themselves trailing 11-16 in the fourth frame. Petron never recovered from their deficit as Perez sealed the win with a kill straight to the backrow that went off the hands of American import Hillary Hurley.
F2 Logistics won its second league title after ruling the the 2016 All-Filipino Conference and became the first team to climb out of an early series deficit and take the throne since the implementation of the best-of-three championship back in 2015.
The Cargo Movers forced a decider after a morale-boosting 25-20, 24-26, 14-25, 25-19, 15-4, victory in Game 2 last Thursday. Petron drew first blood, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16, Tuesday but was denied of adding another Grand Prix crown after winning it all back in 2015.
Hurley scored 25 points while compatriot Stalzer was limited to only nine markers for Petron.
