Well siguro magkakaroon pa kami ng another tryout for next week, siguro, para doon sa mga hindi nakapunta today (Friday) -- National team head coach Ramil De Jesus
National team head coach Ramil de Jesus liked the turnout of the players that attended the first tryout called by Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. but hopes to see more faces in the next set scheduled on Wednesday at the Arellano University Gym in Legarda.
Eighteen players - led by Alyssa Valdez, Jaja Santiago and Kim Fajardo - out of the 34 volleybelles invited were able to attend the tryout Friday.
“Well ‘yung iba kasi, may nagpasabi na talagang may commitment sa ngayon,” said De Jesus, who is making a return stint with the national squad since steering the Filipinas to a bronze medal finish in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games.
Also in attendance were Jia Morado, Ara Galang, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Aby Marano, Sisi Rondina, CJ Rosario, Mylene Paat, Dawn Macandili, Majoy Baron, Kim Kianna Dy, Mel Gohing, Maika Ortiz, Cha Cruz-Behag, Rebecca Rivera and MJ Phillips.
Valdez, Santiago, Fajardo, Marano, Dy, Macandili and Ortiz are all looking to retain their spots in the national team after seeing action in the AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship held in Laguna last year and in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur, Southeast Asian Games. Santiago-Manabat and Gohing are hoping to make another tour of duty after representing the country in the 2015 Singapore Southeast Asian Games and in the 2015 AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship in China, respectively.
“‘Yung iba naman na gusto kong makita, nakita ko today, so nakakatuwa dahil talagang ‘yung mga ibang alam natin na naglaro last SEA Games, andito, nagpakita ng interest. So ayun, nakakatuwa naman,” said De Jesus.
The 10-time UAAP champion mentor of De La Salle University encouraged see those in the 34-player list who weren’t able to attend and those not in the invitation but interested to try their luck to land a spot in the national team to show up in the next open tryout.
“Well siguro magkakaroon pa kami ng another tryout for next week, siguro, para doon sa mga hindi nakapunta today,” said De Jesus. “And then siguro i-open tryout namin.”
“Actually, open tryout naman ito. Mas bigyan natin ng chance ‘yung mga hindi nakapunta,” he added. “Alam naman natin na hindi ganoon kadali dahil maraming commitments ‘yung iba, kaya hopefully next week, makita ko sila.”
Those in the list who skipped the first tryout were Mika Reyes, Rhea Dimaculangan and Frances Molina of Petron,Lourdes Clemente of F2 Logistics, Rachel Anne Daquis, Royse Tubino of Cignal, Myla Pablo and Elaine Kasilag of Pocari Sweat, Tots Carlos and Isa Molde of University of the Philippines; Bea de Leon, Maddie Madayag and Jho Maraguinot of Ateneo de Manila University; Kath Arado of University of the East, Jasmine Nabor of National University and the Far Eastern University duo of Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza.
De Jesus clarified that those invited were the players that he has seen play in the collegiate and the commercial leagues. But the tryout is open even for any player interested to join.
“Ang point ko kasi, ‘yung lahat ng nakikita ko sa PSL, PVL, and UAAP, even sa NCAA, so talagang in-invite ko personal, pinadalhan ko ng letter. Doon sa mga hindi ko nakita, and then open naman sa lahat,” he said. “So siguro meron din akong na-overlook na hindi ko na-invite. Sana ‘wag mag-tampo, mag-punta rin sa another tryout.”
