Shaq Delos Santos replaces Ramil De Jesus as head coach of the national women's volleyball team.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. appointed Petron head coach Shaq delos Santos as the new national women’s team mentor almost two months after naming multi-titled tactician Ramil De Jesus in the position.
Delos Santos was tapped to call the shots for the Nationals set to see action in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games slated on August 18, the AVC Asia Cup in September and the 30th Manila Southeast Asian Games November next year.
The sudden revamp came as a shock even for Delos Santos, who received a text from LVPI vice president Peter Cayco last week informing him of the association’s decision to put him in charge of the national squad.
“Actually last week, Monday, nag-text sa akin si sir Cayco. Then the next day nag-meeting kami and parang mayroon ng appointment na ibinigay sa amin,” said Delos Santos.
“Pero siyempre with due respect kay coach Ramil, tinanong muna namin kung ano muna ang status ni coach Ramil,” continued Delos Santos, who steered Petron to the 2018 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix throne last month.
De Jesus, who handled the national team back in 2005 in the Manila SEA Games where the Filipinas won bronze, was appointed last April and conducted two tryouts attended by the country’s top volleybelles.
But the 11-time UAAP champion mentor of De La Salle University suddenly resigned from his post.
“Siyempre hindi naman pwedeng bigla na lang kami, di naman ganoon kadali. Siyempre alam ng lahat yan na si coach Ramil ang (coach),” said Delos Santos. “Tinanong talaga namin kung kumusta si coach Ramil at kung ano na ba ang status niya. Sinabi naman nila na parang di na raw tutuloy ngayon. Yun ang sinabi ng (LVPI).”
Delos Santos, who steered the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses to their last UAAP title back in 2010, tapped as assistant coaches UST mentor Kungfu Reyes and Bryan Esquibel, who both worked as deputies of former national women’s team coach Francis Vicente last year.
This is Delos Santos’ debut as national team head coach after working as an assistant for Odjie Mamon during the 2003 Vietnam Southeas Asian Games where the Filipinas won bronze.
"Siyempre once in a lifetime opportunity, why not di ba? Kung nakikita nila na pasok ako sa qualification nung pagiging coach ng national team. Eh siyempre minsan lang dumaan sa buhay namin yan," he said. "Sabi ko nga kay sir Cayco, ‘Sir lahat ng coaches gustong marating ang ganyang klase ng karangalan.’"
