The Philippines gave the young South Koreans trouble after tying the match in the second set.

South Korea retaliated with a volleyball clinic in the next two sets to crush the Filipinas, 25-13, 24-26, 25-7, 25-21, Friday in the classification round of the AVC Asian Cup at the Korat Chatchai Hall in in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Koreans crawled back from an early four-point deficit in the fourth set before pulling away in closing stretch of the frame to advance in the second phase of the classification round against Iran on Saturday.

South Korea built a 19-16 lead in the fourth only to see the PHI fight back to close the gap, 19-18. The Koreans answered with four straight points to take a five-point lead.

The Filipinas saved a match point, 24-21, before eventually yielding.

Yerim Go led SoKor with 23 points from 20 attacks and three aces while Hyejin Ha and Minkyoung Hwang added 21 and 17 markers, respectively.

The young Korean squad, composed of SoKor’s developmental team with its main squad preparing for the FIVB World Championship in Japan next week, surrendered the second set after a tight battle with the gritty Filipinas following a hot start.

The set loss just fueled the Korean’s desire to bounce back after dropping their quarterfinal game against Chinese-Taipei as they pounded the PHI into a demoralizing third frame beating.

Alyssa Valdez finished with 15 points while Cha Cruz-Behag and skipper Aby Marano combined for 15 markers for the Filipinas.

The PHI will take on Kazakhstan, which lost to the Filipinas in four sets in the group stage, in the battle for ninth place Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Kazakhstan absorbed a straight sets loss to Vietnam in the other pairing.

Vietnam will face Australia Saturday.
