Ateneo tries to bounce back against Thais
Alyssa Valdez and the rest of the reigning UAAP champion Ateneo including Thai coach Tai Bundit will go up against the Southeast Asian volleyball giant Thailand.

Ateneo resumes action Friday afternoon after a one-day rest against championship-bound powerhouse squad Thailand in the 17th ASEAN University Games volleyball event in Palembang, Indonesia.

Game time is set at 4:00 p.m. (Manila time), with the Lady Eagles clashing against a Thai team backed up by some familiar faces.

Alyssa Valdez and the rest of the reigning UAAP champion squad including Thai coach Tai Bundit will go up against the Southeast Asian volleyball giant led by Shakey’s V-League reinforcements Phomia Soraya, Kannika Thipachot and Wanida Kotruang.

Ateneo will play minus starting setter Jia Morado.

"Unfortunately for today's game, Jia Morado our main setter won't be able to suit up because of fever," team manager Tonyboy Liao said.

The Lady Eagles are coming from a four-set loss against host Indonesia last Wednesday after an opening day victory over Malaysia.

Thailand is undefeated in three games including a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 sweep over Indonesia last Thursday.

"Thailand has a team made up of very experienced players. It has three players that plays in the national team namely Chaisri (Tapaphaipun), Guedpard (Pornpun) and Boonyuen while three more are in their national pool namely Thipachot, Soraya and Kotruang," Liao said.

"Our team every time they train in Thailand plays with this selection. So it will be not the first time for us to meet up with them. Our team knows the strength of this team. We will of course play hard and try to match up with Thailand," he added.

For the Filipinas to get a chance to enter the finals, the Lady Eagles need to sweep all their last two games and hope Indonesia drops their remaining matches. If Ateneo loses, they will need to win over listless Singapore to forge a bronze medal battle against Malaysia.

Ateneo’s last eliminations game is against the Singaporeans at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
