Smart head coach Roger Gorayeb is making his return in the Philippine Superliga after five years.
He may be familiar with the league but the multi-titled mentor admits that his squad will be treading on unfamiliar territory come the All-Filipino Conference slated to unwrap on October 30.
Gorayeb’s last stint in the league was in the inaugural season’s Grand Prix back in 2013 while coaching the PLDT myDSL Speed Boosters, who placed third.
The mentor then transferred to the defunct V-League and Premier Volleyball League where he steered BaliPure to the Open Conference crown last year. He also brought PayMaya to a runner-up finish in the Reinforced Conference before transferring back to the PSL
Back in the league, Gorayeb will bring in the core of his PayMaya wards, mostly making their debut in the PSL.
“Though kilala ko ‘yung mga kalaban ko, kilala ko ‘yung mga players. Pero para kaming greenhorn dito. Pumasok kami sa ibang lugar,” said Gorayeb on Thursday during the league’s press conference at Club Filipino in San Juan.
But the coach and his wards remain unfazed with the big challenge of taking on more experienced squads composed of veteran stars.
“Pero volleyball pa rin naman yan. Isang bola lang ginagamit, same size ng court, kaya siguro madali rin kaming makaka-adjust,” he said. “Para lang syempre pagdating mo, bagong environment lang naman sa amin.”
The Giga Hitters has been preparing for the AFC tournament since last month and are ready to go. Gorayeb is looking at his team’s chemistry and familiarity as their biggest advantage.
“Ganun pa rin, we’ll just rely on our familiarity with each other,” said Gorayeb.
National team members Jasmine Nabor and Gretchel Soltones are set to banner the squad as well as Aiko Urdas, Alyssa Eroa, Angel Cayuna, Czarina Carandang, Jerili Malabanan, Jorelle Singh and Celine Domingo.
Veteran Lizlee Anne Pantone and Lou Ann Latigay are also tipped to make a return after a long absence in the PSL.
